The most common theory and most likely is that Chihuahuas are descended from the Techichi, a companion dog favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. Ancestors of the Chihuahua were believed to have lived with Ancient Aztecs, who conquered the Toltec civilization. The Aztecs believed that these dogs were spirit guides, born to take on the burden of sins and protect souls from evil spirits as they journeyed to the underworld. Archaeologists have found depictions of dogs who resemble Chihuahuas in the pyramids of Cholula in Central Mexico and in the ruins of Chichen Itza.
